“The Conflict”

Love is a fleeting emotion.  Some couples stay together for years and the intimacy fades, but the bond between them grows into admiration and respect.  They live a life of support and every milestone is a grand occasion.

Most of us don’t make it that far.  The life we lead causes us to take different paths with one trying desperately to hold on and the other living a lie.

The small town of Brookwood held no secrets.  If a couple was unhappy everyone knew it.    Any hearsay would become fact after it was spoken.

Chris West’s adventure was public knowledge, which meant that every gossip in town had made sure his wife knew about it, but to her ignorance was better than the truth.

Jenna sipped her coffee at the kitchen table.  Her long blonde hair was tucked behind her ear.   An open window allowed a cool breeze to blow across her face, but she barely noticed.  Her eyes were holding a lake of emotion and she tried desperately to hold it back.

“I don't want to go on a cruise with 500 people that I don't know, laying around on a stinking lounge chair.  The boys and I are going deep sea fishing again this year."

"Chris, it isn't about the cruise, it's about us.  We haven't been on a vacation together since the kids were in school."  She reached out to touch his hand and he pulled away.

"Look, I have already made plans.  I am not gonna change everything just to suit you."

Chris stood up from the table and walked out of the room.  She watched as he walked away.  His belly stuck out from underneath his shirt, but it didn’t matter to her, she loved him deeply.  He walked down the hallway into the bathroom and closed the door.

He knew if he stayed in there, Jenna would bring up the girl.  She does it every time she gets pissed.

Three years ago, Jenna had worked an extra job writing magazine articles to purchase Chris and two of his buddies a fishing expedition to the resort.  It had been the best time of his life.  Now, it was a yearly excursion.

He leaned against the sink and peered into the mirror and let his thoughts drift back in time.

“Do you need some company Pappi?”

Chris looked up from the drink that sat in front of him.  The young girl was standing inches away from his face.  Her tan skin was smooth and the brown iris of her eyes sparkled and was full of life.  Her name was Angelica and in his world, her name was true to its meaning, “like an angel.”

She led him by the hand to the elevator and up to his room.

“Hey, maybe you, we, I, shouldn’t do this.”

She stopped in the hallway, walked up to him and just stood.  Her long black hair hang down past her shoulders.  The dress she wore framed her neckline perfectly and pushed her breast up to a point that barely covered her nipple.

Angelica's lips were painted red and the color was so deep he could see his reflection.  She tugged on his hand and brought his lips down to hers.  She exhaled and the warmth of her breath on his face made his heart skip a beat.  Her tongue met his mouth with her lips and in his mind, they were having sex.

Chris swallowed hard.  He was mesmerized.  That was the last negative word he spoke.  She never released his hand, until he sat down on the bed.  Her fingers hit every button of his shirt with precision.  She sat it neatly folded, on the table.   He watched as she walked around the bed back to where he sat.  The garment she was wearing teased her curves.

She gently removed his pants and underwear, then lay them across the chair.  Again, she stood in front of him.  He could not remember ever being that erect.  She stepped out of her heels and raised her short dress to her waist and removed her panties.  Chris tried hard not to release, the site of her shaved body caused a familiar throbbing.

She lowered one side of her dress from her shoulder, then the other.  It fell to the floor and Chris lay there in total awe.  Her fingers seemed to move in slow motion as she pushed her dark hair behind her ears and lowered her mouth on to him.  Her lips went all the way down and kissed his abdomen.  As she pulled away, the pressure of her tongue was too much to take.

Angelica moved quickly.  She slid on top of him and he easily entered.  The warmth filled her before he was completely inside.  She forced her lips down on his mouth and passionately kissed him.   Her hips flexed violently making a popping sound as her bottom hit his pelvis.  His eyes rolled back and for a moment only the whites were visible.

“Ahhhhhhhhh”, Chris released the sound from deep within him, but she wouldn’t stop.

He gripped her small body with both hands, forcefully bringing her down on to him.  His entire body went limp and she kissed him once softly and placed her head on his chest.  The next three nights made him feel young and full of energy.  He had fallen for her deeply and there was no return.

Things with Jenna was never the same after he arrived back in the states.  Her blonde hair and blue eyes were the exact opposite of what he craved.  Every spare moment was another opportunity to daydream.

For the last three years, he went there and met with the young woman.  Every year had taken him farther away from his marriage.  He resented Jenna, because he had erectile problems which he blamed on her.  In the throes of passion with Angelica, there was never an issue.  She raved about his sexual prowess and stroked his ego.

Jenna pressed her face up against the bathroom door.  Tears now ran down her cheeks and fell on the hardwood floor.

“Please, come out and talk this over with me.  I just want what is best for us.”

She waited on him to answer, but there was no response.

“Please, don’t go back down there.  Chris, I am not a fool.  You could care less about a damn fish.  It’s that girl.  I know it is.”

He jerked open the door so fast, it startled her.  She stepped back and raised her hands, if he attacked her.

“I was waiting for that bull shit.  That is your “go to” accusation every time we argue.  I am sick and tired of hearing about some make believe whore I was with on vacation.  DON”T EVER bring up that shit again, DO YOU HEAR ME.”

Jenna was in shock.  She had not taken a breath since the door opened.  They had raised two beautiful children and he had never lifted a finger to any of them.  Somehow, she knew that things were different now.  Tears ran down her face.  He heart pounded with a dull ache that wouldn’t go away.

Time stood still and when it moved, every second was exaggerated.  His words and actions played out in her mind.  For a moment, she was outside her body looking at the two of them arguing, then she was sucked back in and he was screaming once again.

“Are you deaf.  I said, DO YOU HEAR ME?”

Jenna just started shaking her head and she ran into the bedroom.  The dam had burst and the emotions came out.  Her ears registered the noise which sounded foreign, but she could not stop the escape from her body.

The pillow was the only silencer for what would have been screams.  At one point, her feet were kicking the bed like a child and her nails latched on to the pillow that covered her face.  Chris walked into the bedroom and stood over her.

“Damn, have you lost your mind.  All of this over some lousy fishing trip that YOU started.  If you were going to be such a bitch about it, why did you buy me the fishing trip to begin with.”

He waited for a response, but there was nothing but rage and hurt coming from her.  He stood there watching Jenna.  The screaming stopped and now there was nothing but sobbing and alligator tears which soaked the pillow.

Chris stood over her for a while and tried to answer the recurring question that came into his mind.

“Why do I feel nothing.”  It was hard even for him to understand, how he could feel anger, when his wife of twenty years lay broken on their bed.

He turned and walked out of the bedroom without a word.  The keys to his truck hang on the rack in the kitchen where Jenna had placed them every day since they moved into the house.  The walk to the truck was short and the drive to the bar wasn’t very far.

“Rum Runner” he said to the bartender, as he sat down.  The drink took him back to Punta Cana and with no one beside him at the bar, he enjoyed the memory of his angel once again.

"The Realization"

Jenna went to work every day at Alabama Heritage Magazine, but her heart wasn’t in it.  He had changed the trip from three days to seven.  They had barely spoke since the argument three months before.  It was like two strangers living together, cordial enough, but at the same time coldly distant.

Not even a blind man could miss the pep in Chris’s movements and his energy level, as the time approached for the vacation.  The day he left, was the first day of Jenna’s vacation.  In her mind, she dreamed that he would stay with her.

Chris packed his truck and went to the door and hesitated.  Jenna’s heart skipped a beat.  She ran up to him.

“Thank God, he has come to his senses.”  She said to herself and slowly walked up to him.  Her hands reached out and tugged lightly on his shirt.

“Don’t go Baby.  Stay with me.  We will do something wild.  We can go to Vegas or I’ll even go with you on your trip to fish.”

He pulled back from her.  His face wrinkled and he squinted his eyes to show his absolute disbelief.

“Don’t start your crazy shit again.  I just wanted to tell you that the tree cutters were coming by tomorrow to take down that large pine behind the house.”

The sound of Jenna’s heart could be heard outside her body.  There was no air in her lungs.  She could not remember breathing even minutes after the truck had gone out of sight.  Like a limp rag, her body slid down the wall onto the floor by the door.  The tile cold tile floor beneath her didn’t register in her mind.  Hours had passed and she hadn’t moved.  There had been no tears to shed.  She had done that for the last ninety days.  Now, it was just the realization that she was forty-one years old and married to a man she loved that had moved on.

It was around noon before she came to her senses.  The loud rumbling told her she had not eaten since lunch the day before.  Her mind swirled and indecision filled her thoughts.

“What do I do?”  She said out loud.

Her legs moved toward the couch, and awkwardly, she sat down.  Jenna stared into oblivion as she contemplated her life.  This was her first vacation in ten years.

She bent over and placed her hands over her face.  The pressure of her fingers eased the tension as she rubbed her temples and brushed through her hair.  For a moment, she did nothing.

A loud sound rang out, her phone rang loudly.

“Yeah Alabama, Crimson Tide…”  She breathed out a loud sigh before answering the call.

It was Carla.  She was her best friend and football buddy who insisted that her call tone be the Alabama Fight Song.  Jenna struggled for strength.  The last thing she wanted was anyone’s pity.

“Hey girl, what ya doing?”  Jenna’s voice registered a weakness that Carla had never heard.

“I was just calling to check on you.  I knew that Chris was supposed to leave, what happened?”

There was a hesitation and for a moment, Jenna thought she would faint when the words came out of her mouth.

“I, I think it is over.  There is something going on with him.  He hasn’t spoken to the boys but once in a month.  He didn’t even call them before he left.  That is so unlike him.”

Carla didn’t say anything, she new the story of his on-going visits and had told Jenna.

“Well, I get my lunch break in a minute and you are getting your ass out of that house.”  Carla said.

“I don’t know if I want to go anywhere. I can get an early start on some articles and I.”

    “Jenna!”  Carla yelled interrupting her.

“OMG, what.” She said then laughed for the first time in weeks.

“Get your ass ready and meet me at 5-points.”

“How long do you have?”  Jenna asked, looking for an excuse not to go.

“Till Monday!” Carla said and snickered like she was up to something.

“Oh, ok,  what do you want to eat?”  She asked.  Her voice trailed off looking for another reason to back out.

“Margaritas bitch.  Now get your clothes on, before I come over there and kick your butt!”

Suddenly Jenna regained some of her passion for life that everyone loved about her.  She started shaking her head.

“Alright, I’ll meet you there in thirty minutes.” she said.

Jenna pressed end and stood up.

“Yes, Margaritas!  Yep…that sounds good.  Margaritas with shots of tequila for an appetizer!
